Encypher vs AI detection tools
GPTZero, Originality.ai and other AI detectorsAI detector: A model that guesses whether content was made by AI and returns a probability, not proof. estimate whether text looks AI-written. Encypher does not infer AI authorship from writing style. It signs content when it is made, so a later check shows who signed it, what they declared, and whether it changed.

Side by side
| AI detection tools | Encypher | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Was this likely written by AI? | Who signed this, what did they declare, and did it change? |
| When | After the fact | When the work is published or made |
| Result | A likelihood score | Valid, changed or no mark |
| Works on unsigned text | Yes | No. Unsigned text shows no mark |
| Human work flagged as AI | Happens. Each one is a false positiveFalse positive: A wrong yes, such as human work flagged as AI-made. | No writing-style guess. It reports the signed declaration, which can be wrong |
| Names who signed it | No | Yes, the signer |
When to use each
- Detection
- To screen work that others send you, such as freelance copy or student essays.
- Encypher
- To sign your own published work, or to label what your AI makes.
- Both
- Screen incoming work with a detector. Sign what you publish.
Why a score is weak evidence
- Errors
- OpenAI's own detector caught 26% of AI text and wrongly flagged 9% of human text. OpenAI withdrew it in July 2023. Source
- Scale
- An illustration: at that 9% rate, 200 human-written articles a week would bring about 18 false flags.
For engineers
Show the technical detail
Detectors score features such as perplexity and burstiness with a trained classifier. Encypher computes a hash of the text at signing, signs it with the publisher's key, and embeds the record. A check recomputes the hash and verifies the signature against the signer's certificate. Without the private key, a valid record cannot be made after the fact.
