It uses an open standard Encypher helped create, so anyone can confirm where the text came from.
Signing runs against the public API. When live signing is unavailable, the panel says so and shows a recorded sample that was signed and verified through the production API on a stated date, with no new verification claimed. Verify it where it travels
Anyone can check a signed article on any page: your own site, an aggregator, a syndication partner, a competitor. The check is cryptographic rather than statistical guessing, and it reports the signer record and whether the signed content still matches. It does not establish authorship, ownership, or that a downstream use was authorized.
A document-level C2PA signature stays verifiable while the signed bytes, manifest, and certificate chain are preserved. Encypher sentence-level markers depend on the format and the transformation: retyping a passage, paraphrasing it, or a conversion that strips or normalizes invisible characters removes them.

Signing your website and your new content is free under the fair-use guardrails, and public verification is free for everyone with no account, so nobody is charged to check your content. Signing your own archive yourself with the API or the SDK batch tools is part of free publishing signing under the fair-use guardrails. A managed bulk backfill that Encypher runs for you is a paid add-on. Encypher takes no share of a licensing deal you negotiate yourself, and no plan sold today includes a licensing deal or promised revenue.
Proof that travels, within stated limits
C2PA provenance is embedded in the content itself, and supported text workflows add sentence-level markers, so the record can survive copy-paste and syndication paths that preserve it. Marker recovery still depends on the format and the transformation: a retype, a paraphrase, or a conversion that strips invisible characters removes the text markers. Your supplied rights terms travel with the record, and anyone can read them.

Encypher authored the C2PA standard for unstructured text and co-chairs the C2PA Text Provenance Task Force (with Google, BBC, OpenAI, Adobe, Microsoft); the text standard published January 8, 2026.
