C2PA for Legal

How law firms and in-house teams use C2PA manifests for tamper-evident contracts, filings, and independent proof of when a document existed in what form.

Why legal teams need provenance

Contracts, filings, and exhibits move through email chains where any copy can be altered without a trace. Establishing which version is authentic, and when it existed, consumes discovery hours and expert fees. AI-generated fabrications are making authenticity disputes more common, not less.

What C2PA gives legal teams

Tamper-evident manifests

Any alteration after signing breaks the cryptographic signature, so authenticity disputes start from verifiable facts instead of competing recollections.

Independent timestamps (RFC 3161)

A trusted Time Stamp Authority attests when a document existed in its signed form, useful for priority, notice, and chain-of-custody documentation.

Coverage across legal formats

PDF, DOCX, images, and Section A.7 text are all signable, so one workflow covers contracts, filings, exhibits, and correspondence.

Encypher is C2PA conformant and trusted in all four program categories: Generator, Validator, Certificate Authority, and Time Stamp Authority (passed June 30, 2026). That matters when the signing infrastructure behind a document is itself questioned.
